Flexible work
As part of Stats NZ’s commitment to work life balance we offer flexible working. The standard work week is 37.5 hours however this may be adapted to work in with your role requirements, the business needs and your needs. Flexi-time means you can talk with your manager to mutually agree when you start and finish work. As long as our business needs are being met, this may enable you to adopt working hours that support your out of work commitments. Learning and development
We want our people to grow during their time at Stats NZ, and take our responsibility to steward the careers of our employees seriously. We promote flexible, self-directed employee learning and development, with a wide range of internal and external training programmes on offer to our people to further develop their technical and developmental skills and knowledge. These programmes are delivered in a range of ways: face to face courses, e-learning, study groups, structured on the job training, and coaching. Study assistance is available for the study of relevant tertiary education. We also promote internal rotations, and both internal and external secondments to support your career development pathway.
Leave entitlements
All Stats NZ full time employees are entitled to 20 days of annual leave each year, rising to 22 days after five years’ service. On top of this, we have an additional three days departmental leave provided to cover the days between Christmas and New Year when the office is closed.
Personal health and wellbeing is very important to us, so we offer a sick leave allowance of nine days per year, as well as various circumstantial leave, such as parental leave and bereavement leave, for example.
Stats NZ also has a ‘family friendly’ policy, to ensure that our people are able to maintain a good balance between their work and family life. This was developed after consultation with employees about their needs, and now includes up to six days a year Caregiver leave to deal with family sickness or other needs of dependents. It also includes the opportunity to extend parental leave or take leave without pay to look after children or other dependants such as elderly parents.

The health and safety of everyone at Stats NZ is our top priority. We will work with you to ensure you know how to set-up you work station in a way that supports your individual needs, and advise you of best practice techniques to avoid the risk of discomfort or injury. We take joint responsibility in identifying and reporting health and safety issues and risks in the workplace so we can all have a safe place to work, every day.

Employment agreements
Most employment opportunities at Stats NZ are offered on an ongoing (permanent) basis, although occasionally temporary or fixed-term work is called on for particular projects. Employees have the choice of a standard individual agreement or joining the collective employment agreement (which involves joining the Public Service Association).
