Our vision is to unleash the power of data to change lives.
We enable data-led innovation across society, the economy, and the environment.
A career at Stats NZ means you are part of New Zealand’s data ecosystem – exploring, analysing, wrangling, collaborating, and innovating.
You will work in fantastic teams, in an agile and dynamic workplace, with a flexible and supportive work environment.
You will work with customers across New Zealand. We generate critical economic statistics such as the consumer price index and national accounts to inform financial decisions for the nation. Our business indicators, population statistics, census data, and environmental reporting help inform national policy decisions right through to supporting better decision-making for communities, small businesses, iwi, and individuals.
We offer the opportunity for secondments, rotations, membership of international communities of practice, and time to publish and present research, and to collaborate and influence across the sector.
Our team tells us that they love the variety, opportunity, and the fantastic colleagues they have here at Stats NZ.
They also say that a career at Stats NZ can make a real difference.

How integrated data is shaping New Zealand
Showcasing the Integrated Data Infrastructure
The Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) is New Zealand’s world-leading, innovative and powerful research database containing linked data about people and households. Datasets are integrated from a range of government agencies, Stats NZ surveys, and NGOs in a secure way that protects privacy. These datasets now total over 45, with updates and new datasets being added quarterly.
Integrated data gives researchers a wide, cross-sector view, meaning they can investigate questions that were previously unanswerable. This research covers a broad range of topics, including premature babies, homelessness, and the labour market – all with the end goal of improving outcomes for all New Zealanders. See the video below to show how it works.
