What we do
The International and Business Performance Statistics team at Stats NZ enable New Zealanders to make good decisions by providing data and stories about New Zealand’s interactions with the rest of the world and key industries.
We produce New Zealand’s international accounts that measure transactions, financial positions, and non-transactional changes in financial assets and liabilities occurring between New Zealand residents and non-residents. Balance of Payments and International Investment Position data is a key component of New Zealand’s larger macroeconomic picture and is widely used across government.
The Overseas Trade team produces statistics about New Zealand’s goods trade with the rest of the world and support Pacific countries in compiling their trade statistics.
We collect data about New Zealand businesses and produce statistics for various industries on business operations, research and development, energy use, and information and communications technology.
We collect quarterly financial data across the economy, including key industries like Retail, Manufacturing and Wholesale. We measure sales, purchases, salaries and wages, stocks and profitability. We run a monthly survey of Electronic Card Transactions that can be used to indicate changes in consumer spending and economic activity.
The data we collect is used by a range of government agencies including the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, the Treasury, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the International Monetary Fund, businesses and research organisations also use the data to inform decision-making.
